Despite a market for EVs that hasn’t grown nearly as quickly as expected, Mercedes-AMG is still diving headfirst into electric performance cars. Earlier this year, the company unveiled the 2027 GT 4-Door, which packs up to 1153 horsepower and is expected to replace the gas-powered AMG GT 4-Door when sales start later this year. Now, Mercedes-AMG is teasing its next dedicated EV, which takes the same formula as its new sports sedan and raises the roof.
Mercedes-AMG first announced plans for an electric SUV in November 2024 and teased it for the first time in December 2024. A reveal now appears imminent, with Mercedes-AMG publishing a series of images on social media of the car under a black shroud.
While the sheet obscures most of the electric SUV’s details, a couple of key points shine through. The lighting appears to take a similar approach to the AMG GT 4-Door, with the headlights forming a three-pointed star with one longer LED line angled inward towards the car’s center. The taillights also feature a small three-pointed star, which sits inside a circular border just like on the GT 4-Door, although the sedan has three sets of this motif while the SUV may only have one.
The rest of the styling is expected to largely mirror the polarizing look seen on the GT 4-Door, with a ridge between the headlights where the top edge of the grille sits and bulging wheel arches. An LED light bar linking the headlights is also a possibility.
In terms of powertrains, nothing is confirmed yet, but the SUV is expected to feature similar options to the GT 4-Door. That means a tri-motor powertrain making 805 horsepower in GT55 trim and 1153 hp in GT63 trim, along with a dual-motor version producing 536 hp. The AMG GT 4-Door packs a 106-kWh battery offering around 300 miles of range. The electric AMG SUV is expected to be revealed before the end of the year and go on sale sometime in late 2027.
