What’s New for 2028?
Volvo has installed a much larger, 37.9-kWh battery pack in the XC90 Hybrid this year, boosting driving range to a claimed 73 miles per charge.

The XC90 T8 makes use of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that works with a rear-axle-mounted electric motor to produce 455 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard.
The XC90 T8 earns only passing marks when it comes to road manners, but it does have nicely weighted steering and nimbler handling than expected for such a large and heavy SUV. With the standard suspension, the XC90’s ride feels too rigid, so opting for the available air-spring suspension — offered on the Ultra trim — is worth the extra cost.

The T8 plug-in hybrid uses a 37.9-kWh battery pack that Volvo says is good for 73 miles of driving range per charge. While the battery cannot quick-charge on a DC fast charger, it can be charged at home or at Level 2 public charging stations. Volvo claims the battery takes around four hours to charge from 0 to 100 percent using a 240-volt, 16-amp outlet. Volvo also provides a drive mode that allows the driver to hold the battery’s charge for later use or add charge while the gas engine powers the car.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: The XC90’s interior is a masterpiece of restraint, featuring an artful design and high-quality materials that together create a warm, upscale ambiance. Last year’s updates brought even better materials, a redesigned dashboard, a revised center console, and new textile upholstery options.
Second Row: All models are offered with either a six- or seven-seat layout; a pair of captain’s chairs or a three-across bench seat is available. There’s plenty of space in the second row, even for taller passengers, and the materials are just as premium as they are up front.
Third Row: Adults won’t be happy in the third row, especially on longer journeys. It is sufficiently roomy for children, but claustrophobia will likely set in on anything longer than a short drive.
Cargo Capacity: The XC90’s wide, boxy silhouette helps in the cargo-hauling department, though interior storage compartments aren’t as cavernous as in some competitors. In testing, three carry-on suitcases fit behind the XC90’s third row; with the third row stowed, 15 fit; and with both the second and third rows folded flat, 30 carry-ons fit inside.
