What We Know So Far


Hummers were made famous for their long history with the U.S. military and as gas-guzzling celebrity fashion statements, but the brand’s recent revival under the GMC umbrella has it poised to become a leader among electric pickup trucks. With Tesla teasing the unconventional Cybertruck and upstart Rivian preparing the R1T truck and R1S SUV, General Motors claps back with the Hummer EV SUT pickup and the Hummer EV SUV. Both are expected to have a driving range of up to 400 miles on a single charge, fast-charging capability, and massive power outputs. Each body style will also boast removable roof panels à la the Jeep Wrangler, Gladiator, and upcoming Ford Bronco. The Hummer SUV could also offer a third row to go along with its generous cargo space. While we don’t have all the details on the upcoming model, here’s what we know so far.

What’s New for 2022?

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV SUV represents the return of an iconic brand, except now it’s being used to usher in a new generation of electric vehicles. It will also help introduce GM’s new battery and charging technology that will be featured on the company’s slew of upcoming EVs.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

GMC hasn’t said how much the Hummer EV SUV will cost or exactly what trim levels will be offered. However, we expect the lineup to align with the recently revealed pickup and cost slightly less, which should put its starting price at right around $75,000 when it debuts in fall 2021.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Since the Hummer EV SUV will be mechanically identical to its pickup-truck counterpart, we expect it to offer the same set of electric motors. We know that the Hummer pickup will initially be available with a three-motor setup that makes 1000 horsepower—and a dubious 11,500 lb-ft of torque that we’ve called misleading. Eventually, we expect the truck and SUV will also be available with one or two electric motors. The single unit suggests a rear-drive model while the two- and three-motor setups indicate two different all-wheel-drive potencies. Of course, both body styles look to have impressive off-road chops thanks to the availability of chunky 35-inch tires, an adjustable air-ride suspension, extensive underbody protection, and four-wheel steering that allows them to drive diagonally or “crab” sideways. We also expect them to have the ability to tow a hefty amount.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

As with the Hummer EV pickup, the SUV will use an 800-volt architecture that allows 350-kilowatt fast-charging. Once plugged in, it’ll be able to add 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. The Hummer EV SUV is also expected to have the same 350 miles of estimated driving range as the truck version.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Neither the EPA nor GMC have announced how efficient the Hummer EV SUV will be. Once that information is released, and we have a chance to test one on our 75-mile highway route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen and helps us evaluate how efficient the electrified SUV is in the real world.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Now that we’ve seen the interior of the Hummer EV pickup truck, we have a pretty good idea what to expect inside the SUV version. That means a mix of durable materials and physical controls among the boxy design elements and digital displays on the dashboard. The former is a 12.3-inch display that acts as the gauge cluster. We also expect it to have removable roof panels—called the Infinity roof—as seen on the truck. The SUV’s EV platform gives it a spacious cabin with a flat floor throughout thanks to its battery pack being mounted underneath. We expect the Hummer EV SUV to have a big back seat, and since it shares a platform with the pickup truck, it might even have a third row. Regardless, of whether it’s outfitted with two or three rows, the GMC EV should have plenty of versatile interior cubby storage and considerable cargo space.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Hummer’s cutting-edge electric technology will be complemented by state-of-the-art infotainment features such as a large 13.4-inch touchscreen and extensive connectivity options. As with most GMC models, desirable content such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot is expected to come standard. We’d also expect available upgrades to include a powerful Bose stereo, built-in navigation, a rear-seat infotainment system, and wireless charging.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2022 Hummer EV SUV hasn’t been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, it’ll definitely be available with myriad driver-assistance technology. The latter will include GM’s Super Cruise system that provides hands-free driving through automated lane-changing assist. Key safety features should include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Standard adaptive cruise control

    Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

    GMC provides a competitive limited and powertrain warranty that should apply to the Hummer EV SUV. Along with the shortest complimentary maintenance possible, GM covers electrical components for eight years or 100,000 miles, which aligns with most electric vehicles.

    • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
    • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
    • Hybrid components are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles
    • Complimentary maintenance is covered for the first visit
