Overview

There’s only one thing that’s more highly anticipated than the new Bronco, and that is its high-performance counterpart, the 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor. Now, we’re not sure whether Ford will officially call it Raptor or Warthog, but we’re going with the former until we’re told otherwise. Following a similar formula as the regular Bronco, with retro-themed styling and removable body panels, it should also boast even more enticing enhancements. We expect these to include a 400-plus-hp twin-turbo V-6, a stronger and more flexible suspension, and a roster of desirable off-road equipment such as 37-inch tires. While we prepare for our first driving impressions of the more mainstream model, we’ll continue to curate anticipation for the upcoming hi-po Bronco. Here’s what we know so far.

What’s New for 2022?

We’ve covered virtually everything about the new Ford Bronco, and now we’re speculating about the inevitable high-performance version, which we expect to arrive for the 2022 model year.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

    Ford has been mum on specific details about the upcoming Bronco Raptor, including how much it’ll cost, but we expect its myriad performance upgrades to make it the most expensive model you can buy. That means its price should be higher than the 2021 Ford Bronco First Edition, which starts at $60,800. So, we’d guess that the Raptor will start at about $61,000 when it eventually goes on sale.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

    Since we’ve been told that Ford won’t put a V-8 in the Bronco, we expect the highest-performance variant to feature an extra-potent EcoBoost V-6. We know that the most powerful version of the regular Bronco has a twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6, which makes 310 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, so we’d wager that the Bronco Raptor will adopt either the 400-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 that powers the Explorer ST or the 450-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 in the current F-150 Raptor. Coincidentally, the latter matches the horsepower made by the Hemi V-8 that Jeep teased with the Wrangler 392 Concept. Whatever engine the Ford gets, it’ll likely pair exclusively with a 10-speed automatic transmission and an advanced all-wheel-drive system that should work in concert with selectable drive modes. The Bronco Raptor should also have an even beefier suspension setup to best handle powering over sand dunes or being jumped through the air, as we saw with this camouflaged prototype version. Another set of photos showed a test mule rolling on a set of huge 37-inch tires underneath what looked like pronounced fender flares.

    Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

    Neither the EPA nor Ford has released any fuel-economy ratings for the 2022 Bronco Raptor. Once those figures are released and we have the opportunity to test one on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route—part of our extensive testing regimen—we can evaluate its real-world mpg.

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

    Despite its enhanced off-road abilities, the Bronco Raptor will share its interior design and dimensions with the regular Bronco. That means it should be available with rubberized flooring, marine-grade vinyl upholstery, and an overhead set of auxiliary toggles. Those who want a more luxurious cabin can likely opt for leather seats, too. While we don’t know whether the Raptor will be offered with only two doors, we’re confident there will be a four-door version. We do expect the Bronco Raptor to be available with a softtop or hardtop, as well as removable body panels, specifically frameless doors that Ford claims are easy to remove. It should also inherit a host of innovative features that includes exterior mirrors mounted on the base of the windshield that are still usable when the doors are taken off. Likewise, there should be a rack built into the top of its dashboard that allows smartphones and GoPros, which can be plugged into nearby 12-volt outlets, to be mounted there.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

    We expect the Bronco Raptor to feature Ford’s latest Sync 4 interface, and it will probably power a large touchscreen that’s mounted in the middle of the dashboard. The infotainment system should also come with contemporary features that include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The most desirable options should include built-in navigation and a powerful Bang & Olufsen sound system.

    Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

    The 2022 Bronco Raptor hasn’t been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). We expect its roster of available driver-assistance technology to mirror that of the regular Bronco, which features equipment that makes low-speed rock crawling and driving on trails easier. Key safety features will likely include:

    • Available forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
    • Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
    • Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert

      Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

      Ford provides a competitive limited and powertrain warranty that aligns with most of its rivals. However, the company lacks the complimentary scheduled maintenance that Jeep offers.

      • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
      • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
      • No complimentary scheduled maintenance
