The annual Car and Driver 10Best picks are out, and while each vehicle gets an extensive write-up about why it was chosen to be better than the rest in its segment, as with any good award there’s always a back story. Editor-in-Chief Sharon Carty and editors Dave VanderWerp, Tony Quiroga, and Eric Tingwall went through each vehicle on the 10Best list and shared details about why each vehicle was chosen, including information about how the Ram 1500 TRX produced more post-drive smiles than any other vehicle.
During a Q&A session, the editors talked about the lack of EVs on the list this year and how it’s not completely out of the question for an autonomous vehicle that still has the ability to be driven by human could land in the lineup at some point in the far future.
VanderWerp told attendees to the virtual meetup: “I know that as the testing director I trade in data a lot. Here’s the data point from this year’s 10Best. There were more smiles of people that got out of the TRX than any other car there with the possible exception of the Boxster.”
When asked about attitudes toward autonomous cars, deputy editor for reviews Quiroga said: “I live in Los Angeles. So if it’s dealing with traffic for me when driving isn’t fun, I’m down with that. Then if I go up into the canyons and it’s fun to play with and as good to drive as, you know, a Cayman or something. I’m all about that.”
